An Internet search for instructional dance video will produce a long list of resources including online instruction. You can spend a considerable amount on material you may never be able to use. If you have spent some timeĀ investigating various dancesĀ and find some of them of interest you are better equipped to evaluate the video instruction you encounter.
Much of the instructional video you find will be performed by dancers who demonstrate more than the average beginner can assimilate. While there are legitimate differences in teaching technique the elements of a dance need to be presented in a manageable sequence. Don’t forget that these are professionals in the video and can make complex manoeuvres appear very easy. Few beginners can master the elements [foot placement, dance hold, floor position, rise and fall, degree of turn, sway, hip movement, lead and follow] of a single dance step from a single video lesson. Even if you were able to do so it would be of little use on a dance floor.
Instruction that provides some basic dance hold, foot placement and floor position for a sequence of two or three dance steps will be easier to learn and of more practical on the dance floor. Being able to move around the dance floor in the case of ballroom dances or to link a repeatable step sequence in the case of latin dances will provide more enjoyment. Once you have the ability to link several steps together you will have a better chance to add more technique and style elements.
Look for instructional video that demonstrates short sequences and breaks the sequences down into the component elements should be of more use to you than any single step taught in extreme detail or a set of such detailed steps.
I have serious doubts that video instruction can lead to a mastery of such critical elements as the dance hold (dance frame) of lead and follow. I do believe that video instruction can supplement face-to-face instruction and if you add a third component, home video of yourselves practicing, the combination can prove quite effective.
